Fenn Bell Miniature Railway

The railway is 7 1/4″ gauge and consists of roughly a 400 yard running line in a loop, with a two platform terminus station called Fenn Street built off of a triangle junction with turntable and engine release road. A second station called Bell Wood is located on the main running line. Trains stop at Bell Wood for special events only. Both Stations have roof canopies that cover the platforms and track. The line makes its way around the pub grounds and zoo. Yes the Fenn Bell is a pub with a miniature railway and a zoo in the 4 acre grounds. The railway passes close by many of the animal enclosures giving a good view and a different perspective from the public walking route. On your trip you will pass by the duck pond, through a tunnel between the monkeys and parrots, passed the platinum foxes, raccoons, coatis, pigs and many others! The train makes its way around the main circuit twice giving a total journey of over a 1/3 of a mile.

The railway will re open in 2017 at Easter for our first special event of the year. The intentions are to then operate the railway every Saturday and the occasional Sunday from Easter to the end of August. During school holidays the railway will open Wednesday to Sunday.

The main running line is now complete and the full circuit was used for passenger running for the first time at our 2016 Halloween event. During 2017 work will continue on installing a turntable and second platform line at Fenn Street. The loco and carriage shed along with a permanant loading ramp also need to be constructed. The track is all being constructed on site by builder Paul Wenham. The rail is 20 x 10mm steel bar welded on to steel sleepers and then attached to pressure treated wooden sleepers. The track will then be laid on road planings and finished off with 20mm granite chippings.

There is currently a Romulus Steam engine under overhaul which will be used on the railway once complete in 2018 along with a Mardyke petrol locomotive which is currently on loan. A Station Rd Steam ‘Stafford’ is also currently on loan and will operate some services during 2017. Current stock consists of 4 purpose built CMD Engineering sit in carriages which were delivered new to the railway in December 2016. These are in a blue livery and finished with gold lining and logos. We also have 3 Mardyke carriages on loan from CMD so once platform 2 is finished at Fenn St a two train service will be possible later this year..

On site as well is a purpose built ballast wagon, a flat wagon, a tipper wagon and carriage for use on track laying  and permanent way trains.

The railway is currently looking for volunteers with some previous miniature railway experience to help with laying and maintaining the track and to run the railway.
